This grant helps academy trusts, Voluntary Aided schools, and sixth-form colleges fix urgent building problems. You can only apply if you do not get school condition allocation funding. The money is for serious building issues that could force your school to close. Most funding comes as loans, not grants. You need to prove the loan is affordable for your organisation. The Department for Education will check your financial health before approving funding. Applications close on 1 April 2026.
Who can apply:
Key requirements:
- Must not receive school condition allocation funding
- Must have urgent building issues threatening closure
- Subject to financial assessment
- Most funding provided as loans
This is for academy trusts, Voluntary Aided schools, and sixth-form colleges in England. You must not already receive school condition allocation funding. You need urgent building repairs that threaten school closure.
Urgent Capital Support is intended for academy trusts and Voluntary Aided (VA) schools, not in receipt of school condition allocation, and sixth-form colleges that want to apply for funding assistance to address urgent building condition issues that threaten the closure of the whole, or a significant part of the school. Applications are subject to a financial assessment, using the core financial returns shared with the Department for Education. For all academy applications, financial health is considered at academy trust level and not against the individual school. Please note that most successful applications will be funded through loan arrangements, where these are deemed affordable for the recipient.
