Overview
The Green Roots Fund from the Greater London Authority pays for projects that create and improve green and blue spaces across London. Green spaces include parks, trees and community gardens. Blue spaces include wetlands, rivers and sustainable drainage. Round 4 is open now. You can apply for a grant of £10,000 to £500,000. Over £12 million is available across three years. Projects can last up to two years. You need at least 10% match funding, and in-kind support counts towards this. The fund backs two kinds of work. Implementation work changes a physical place, for example rewilding, tree planting, restoring wetlands or adding flood prevention and urban cooling. Enabling work supports the groundwork, such as feasibility studies, baseline surveys, design work, community science, outreach and community micro-grant schemes. It suits local authorities and not-for-profit organisations with projects that make neighbourhoods healthier, more nature-rich and climate resilient. The funder also wants projects that involve diverse groups of Londoners in managing and making decisions about these spaces. The deadline for Round 4 is 2pm on 14 January 2027. The online application system stays open most of the time, so you can work on your application at your own pace. Each round has priority themes, which are shared about three months before the deadline. Projects outside those themes can still be funded. One practical point: the funder will not advise or hold meetings on individual projects.
