Overview

Poultry Biosecurity Reviews pay for a vet to assess biosecurity at your poultry sites in England. It is part of Defra's Animal Health and Welfare Pathway, run with the Rural Payments Agency and the Animal and Plant Health Agency. You can claim £430 for each review, and up to 3 reviews per site. Each site must be on a separate county parish holding (CPH) number, and reviews on the same site must be at least 10 months apart. One agreement per single business identifier (SBI) can cover several sites and species. To qualify, a site must hold at least 1,000 chickens (breeders, broilers, layers or pullets), or 500 ducks, 500 geese or 500 turkeys. You cannot add species together to reach the threshold, so 200 ducks and 300 turkeys would not count. You do not need to own the birds, but you must be responsible for their welfare when the vet visits. A review can even happen when a site is empty, as long as it has capacity for the minimum number of birds. The vet's assessment covers things like site layout, visitors and hygiene, bird movements, feed and water, manure and carcass removal, cleaning and disinfection. Afterwards the vet gives you a summary sheet, which you need to make your claim, and a written report with recommended actions.
