Capital grants pay for things that last: a new roof, an accessible toilet, a kitchen, a heating system, a changing room or a whole new building. They are usually larger than grants for activities, take longer to decide, and come with more checks, because the funder wants to know the building will be used and looked after for years.
This page lists live capital grants for charities, CICs, community groups and parish councils that run community buildings and facilities. If your building is a village hall, our village hall page lists the funds written for halls in particular.

Landfill funders
Some of the steadiest capital money for community buildings comes through the Landfill Communities Fund. Biffa Award funds community buildings such as village halls, community centres and church halls with £10,000 to £75,000, for projects costing up to £200,000. The FCC Communities Foundation Community Action Fund gives £10,000 to £100,000 for public amenities, for projects up to £250,000. Both need the site to be close enough to an eligible landfill site, so check your postcode first.

Lottery, trusts and councils
National Lottery Awards for All covers small capital costs as well as activities. Larger charitable trusts fund capital work too, often as part of a bigger appeal, and many councils have funds paid for by housing developers, such as Section 106 and Community Infrastructure Levy money, for facilities in the areas affected by new homes.

Getting ready before you apply
Most capital funders will only consider a project that is ready to go. That usually means planning permission or other consents in place, a written quote or cost plan, proof that you own the building or have a lease with enough years left, and evidence that local people want the project. Starting work before a grant is agreed normally rules you out, so plan the order of things carefully.
Putting the money together
Big building projects are rarely paid for by one funder. Expect to combine two or three grants with your own fundraising, and to explain to each funder who else is contributing. A clear budget that shows what each grant pays for, and what happens if one falls through, makes every application stronger.

East Cambridgeshire Facilities Improvement Grant
East Cambridgeshire District Council
The Facilities Improvement Grant from East Cambridgeshire District Council helps to develop and improve community facilities that make life better for people in East Cambridgeshire. It pays for capital projects only. That could mean improving or building a village hall, community centre, sport and leisure centre, play facility or public open space. Ongoing running costs are not eligible. Your project must fit one of four categories: community centres or village halls, multi-purpose sports and leisure centres that serve the general public, play facilities, or open spaces. The council looks mainly for evidence that you have assessed local community needs. You can ask for up to £10,000. The fund is open all year round, so there is no closing date. You can apply online, or download the application form as a PDF and return it to the council. Applicants typically include parish or town councils in East Cambridgeshire, charities, companies limited by guarantee, industrial or provident societies and community interest companies. There is one important caveat. If a parish holds unallocated Section 106 or Community Infrastructure Levy money that covers the full cost of your project, you cannot apply. If that money falls short of the total cost, you can apply for the balance, up to £10,000. Non-parish council applicants should check with their parish council first. To find out about S106 funding, email FIG@eastcambs.gov.uk or call 01353 665555. Only £30,000 is available each year across all projects, so not every eligible application may be funded. Each organisation can apply once in a financial year. Official source: https://eastcambs.gov.uk/services/community-safety-and-wellbeing/grants-and-community-projects/facilities-improvement-grant. Open Grants Programme
The Clothworkers' Foundation
The Clothworkers' Foundation runs an Open Grants Programme that offers capital grants. The Foundation says these grants can empower your charity to make a meaningful impact in your community. The Foundation supports charities and social businesses that work with marginalised and disadvantaged people and communities. It also backs organisations working towards a more equitable society. Its wider aim is a society where all can participate and thrive. In 2025 the Foundation introduced an Impact Framework. This led to a review and update of the Open Grants Programme, and the Foundation has published news on its Open Funding priorities. If you are thinking of applying, it is worth reading that update first so you understand how the programme is set up today. The Foundation also runs a Disability Equity portfolio, which includes ALLFIE, DEWA, Disability Wales, Inclusion London and Disability Rights UK. This is separate from the Open Grants Programme, but it shows the kind of work the Foundation cares about. The Foundation's homepage has pages on its Open Funding and on applying for a grant. You can also read its latest Annual Review 2025 for a closer look at its grantmaking. Official source: https://www.clothworkersfoundation.org.uk/. Last checked by GrantMatch on 16 October 2026.
North Paddington Community Capital Grant
Westminster City Council
The North Paddington Community Capital Grant is offered by Westminster City Council. It supports capital projects for community organisations in the North Paddington area. The council's grant funding page lists it in the "Open for applications" section. The listing says expressions of interest for 2025/26 funding are open. It does not give a grant size, a closing date or detailed rules. Those details sit on a separate page linked from the listing, called "More about the grant and how to apply". The wording refers to the 2025/26 funding year and gives no closing date. Before you spend time on a bid, it is worth confirming with the council that expressions of interest are still being taken. The council says voluntary and community sector organisations in Westminster can access its grants. Its funds cover areas such as arts and culture, climate change and homelessness. If your project is not a capital project, other funds on the same page may suit you better. The Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure fund and Ward Budgets are both listed as ongoing. Ward Budgets are for place-based projects that benefit residents and tackle local issues and priorities. This grant is best suited to community organisations based in, or working in, North Paddington that have a capital project in mind. Veolia Environmental Trust Community and Environment Grant
Veolia Environmental Trust
Veolia Environmental Trust awards grants towards projects that improve community facilities and the natural environment. This listing points to the funder's main funding page, which is the starting point for anyone thinking of applying. The page sets out a route in three sections, and you need to work through them in order. First, an eligibility checker lets you confirm that your project site is in an area the Trust funds. You need to do this before you apply. Second, the funding criteria explain what the Trust is able to fund and how much you can apply for. Third, a section on when to apply gives the funding round closing dates and says when is best to apply. After those three sections, the Trust offers funding guidance with more information about its application and grant-making process. If you think your project meets the criteria, there is an Apply for funding link that takes you to the application. The Trust says it is happy to help. If you would like to discuss your project, you can contact the team before you start. The main practical point is location. Your project site must be in an area the Trust funds, so use the eligibility checker first. That way you will not spend time on an application for a site that is outside the funded areas. This funding page does not itself state award sizes or a closing date. Those sit in the funding criteria and the funding round dates sections, which the page describes but does not reproduce. Create free accountBiffa Award Community Grants
Biffa Award
Biffa Award gives grants to community projects near landfill sites. In its own words, it aims to build communities and transform lives. This listing covers its community grants, which suit projects close to a landfill site. The funder's home page is organised by grant theme. Each theme has its own page with more detail. There are also buttons that lead to "Am I Eligible?" and "How Do I Apply?", and a set of frequently asked questions if you have queries before you start. If you already hold a grant and have a live project, the site has a place where you can view its progress. You can also read the latest Annual Review and Impact Assessment to see what the funding has achieved so far. That can help you judge whether your idea fits the kind of work the funder supports. The key practical point is location. The funder focuses on projects near landfill sites, so think about where your project will take place before you put time into an application. Questions
How many capital grants for community buildings are open?
Today GrantMatch lists 18 live capital grants for community buildings and facilities from 18 funders. 1 offer over £100,000 and 14 have no fixed deadline.
What counts as a capital cost?
Buying, building, repairing or improving something that lasts, such as a building, a room, fixed equipment or an outdoor space. Running costs like salaries, rent, bills and activities are revenue costs and are usually funded separately.
Can we get a grant for work we have already started?
Almost never. Capital funders want to fund work that has not started yet, and many say so in their rules. Wait for a written offer before you sign a contract or start on site.
Do we need to own the building?
Usually you need to own it or hold a lease with several years left. Landfill funders often ask for at least seven years remaining on a lease, and some larger funders ask for more.
How do you check these grants?
We collect grants from official funder pages, GOV.UK, councils and community foundations, and remove them when they close. Each grant page links to its source and shows when we last checked it. Always confirm the details with the funder before you apply.
