Environmental grants for community groups and charities

As of 26 October 2026, GrantMatch lists 38 live environmental grants for community groups from 35 funders. 9 close in the next 30 days, the first on 29 October 2026, 19 are open all year with no fixed deadline, and 26 were added this week. Each entry links to the official source.

Listings last checked 22 October 2026. Guide checked 26 October 2026.

Most environmental money for community groups is local. District councils run climate and nature funds for their own area, climate action hubs give small starter grants, and landfill and airport operators fund projects near their sites. Add the community foundations and national lottery programmes, and a small group with a good idea for a wildflower verge, a repair cafe or a pond often has more options than it expects.

This page lists live grants for charities, CICs and community groups whose purpose is the environment: nature and wildlife, climate action, green spaces, recycling and waste. Research funding and business grants are left out. Our sector page lists every environment grant, including those for businesses.

Guide

Checked 26 October 2026 against the official sources linked.

The Landfill Communities Fund

Landfill operators in England and Northern Ireland can give part of their landfill tax to approved funders, who then grant it to not-for-profit projects. Most of it pays for public parks, nature reserves, habitats and community buildings, and most projects must be within 10 miles of a licensed landfill site. Entrust, the regulator, has a tool to find the funders that cover your area, such as the Veolia Environmental Trust, Biffa Award and the FCC Communities Foundation.

Source: Entrust: what is the Landfill Communities Fund?, Entrust: find a Landfill Communities Fund funder

Bigger grants for green spaces

The Veolia Environmental Trust gives £10,000 to £75,000 to improve buildings or outdoor spaces the public can use at least 16 hours a week, such as parks, play areas, woodland and nature reserves. Like other landfill funders, it needs a 10% contribution from a third party before it releases the grant, and all permissions must be in place when you apply.

Council and climate hub funds

Many district and borough councils now run community climate and nature funds, usually up to about £10,000, for projects like tree planting, food growing, energy saving in community buildings and reducing waste. In Scotland, regional climate action hubs offer small grants and mentoring. These funds tend to open once or twice a year, so it is worth checking this page regularly.

Writing a good environmental bid

Be specific about the difference your project will make and how you will show it: the area of habitat improved, the number of volunteers, the waste kept out of landfill. Funders also look for community support, so include who asked for the project and who will look after it once the grant is spent.

Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and Business and Local Economy Fund (BLEF)

HS2 Ltd

£10,000 - £250,000England

HS2 Ltd runs two linked funds for places disrupted by building the HS2 railway between London and Crewe (Phase One and Phase 2a). They are the Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and the Business and Local Economy Fund (BLEF). Both are open now and close on 31 March 2035. CEF suits charities and community groups. It backs projects that improve quality of life and the local environment, such as better walking, cycling or horse-riding access, nature conservation, sports and recreation facilities, public open space, community facilities, or the re-use of historic buildings. CEF Local funds projects of up to £75,000. CEF Strategic funds larger projects across several communities, from £75,001 up to £250,000. BLEF suits organisations with formal objectives to support local business or tourism. It offers capital or revenue grants from £10,000 up to £250,000 for work that helps local economies, such as promotional campaigns, events that bring in footfall, tourism projects, public realm improvements and business support or training. The size of an award reflects the number of businesses your project supports and the benefits it delivers. Both funds must add benefit over and above the mitigation and compensation already committed. Your project needs to address disruption from HS2 construction. One practical point: decisions on grants of up to £75,000 take about 8 weeks. Larger grants have two stages and take about 16 weeks after each stage. Sustainable Steps Wales - Egin Grants

National Lottery Community Fund

£100 - £35,000England, National (UK-wide)

Sustainable Steps Wales - Egin Grants from the National Lottery Community Fund support community groups in Wales that are taking action on climate change and want to live more sustainably. The funding can also help groups kick-start their ideas. You can apply for between £100 and £35,000. The page says the programme is open to applications and that a decision takes 4 weeks. No closing date is given. The main aim of your project should be to help your community engage with climate change and take steps to live more sustainably. The funder also wants to support groups that think about the impact of their activities on nature and, where possible, limit any potentially damaging practices. Other benefits count too. These might include improving people's wellbeing, improving relationships between people and organisations, and improving biodiversity. The funder likes organisations that are open to learning and plan to share what they have learnt with others. One practical caveat matters before you start. To apply, your group must already have received support from the Egin mentoring programme. If your group has not had that support, you will not be able to apply for this funding. This programme suits community groups in Wales that have worked with Egin and now have a project ready to put into action. Veolia Environmental Trust Community and Environment Grant

Veolia Environmental Trust

Funding amount not listedEngland

Veolia Environmental Trust awards grants towards projects that improve community facilities and the natural environment. This listing points to the funder's main funding page, which is the starting point for anyone thinking of applying. The page sets out a route in three sections, and you need to work through them in order. First, an eligibility checker lets you confirm that your project site is in an area the Trust funds. You need to do this before you apply. Second, the funding criteria explain what the Trust is able to fund and how much you can apply for. Third, a section on when to apply gives the funding round closing dates and says when is best to apply. After those three sections, the Trust offers funding guidance with more information about its application and grant-making process. If you think your project meets the criteria, there is an Apply for funding link that takes you to the application. The Trust says it is happy to help. If you would like to discuss your project, you can contact the team before you start. The main practical point is location. Your project site must be in an area the Trust funds, so use the eligibility checker first. That way you will not spend time on an application for a site that is outside the funded areas. This funding page does not itself state award sizes or a closing date. Those sit in the funding criteria and the funding round dates sections, which the page describes but does not reproduce. National Lottery Awards for All England – Environment

The National Lottery Community Fund

£300 - £20,000England

This National Lottery Community Fund programme is open to applications. It funds community-led projects in England that improve the environment and help people connect with and enjoy nature where they live. You can ask for between £300 and £20,000. The funder says the climate and nature emergency affects us all, and that local action can make a real difference. Your project needs to meet one of two priorities. The first is to help people connect with and care for nature in their area. The second is to make a positive difference to the environment. You can use the money to start a new activity or to continue an existing one. You can also use it to help your organisation adapt to new challenges, or to run one-off events that have a clear environmental benefit. This suits community-led groups and organisations in England with a local environmental or nature project in mind. The page gives no closing date, and the programme is open now. The funder expects to give you a decision in 16 weeks, so plan your timing with that in mind. One practical caveat: you cannot apply if you already have an Awards for All grant. If you want more general funding for community projects, the funder points you to its main National Lottery Awards for All England programme instead. Official source: https://www.tnlcommunityfund.org.uk/funding/funding-programmes/national-lottery-awards-for-all-england-environment. Last checked by GrantMatch on 16 October 2026.

Biffa Award Community Grants

Biffa Award

Funding amount not listedEngland

Biffa Award gives grants to community projects near landfill sites. In its own words, it aims to build communities and transform lives. This listing covers its community grants, which suit projects close to a landfill site. The funder's home page is organised by grant theme. Each theme has its own page with more detail. There are also buttons that lead to "Am I Eligible?" and "How Do I Apply?", and a set of frequently asked questions if you have queries before you start. If you already hold a grant and have a live project, the site has a place where you can view its progress. You can also read the latest Annual Review and Impact Assessment to see what the funding has achieved so far. That can help you judge whether your idea fits the kind of work the funder supports. The key practical point is location. The funder focuses on projects near landfill sites, so think about where your project will take place before you put time into an application. Laidlaw Fund for the Environment

Cumbria Community Foundation

Up to £2,000North West England

The Laidlaw Fund for the Environment, run by Cumbria Community Foundation, supports projects that protect wildlife habitat and teach people about the natural environment in Cumbria. Priority goes to projects in Carlisle and the surrounding area. The fund was created by Eleanor Laidlaw in memory of her parents, who gave her a lifelong love of nature. She wants future generations to enjoy the wonder and beauty of the natural world and to learn about it. You could ask for help with local environment and habitat initiatives. Activities that inform and educate, such as forest schools, also fit. So do environmental and habitat workshops, and activities that encourage people to get involved in protecting and improving the natural environment. Grants will normally be up to £2,000 over one year. That makes the fund a good match for small, local projects. The fund is for charitable, not-for-profit organisations. It will not support individuals, and the foundation's normal exclusions also apply, so read these before you start. All applications are made through the foundation's online application portal, and the page links to a step-by-step help guide. If you have questions, you can call Lisa Blackwell on 01900 825760 or email grants@cumbriafoundation.org. Official source: https://www.cumbriafoundation.org/fund/laidlaw-fund-for-the-environment/. Questions

How many environmental grants are open to community groups?

Today GrantMatch lists 38 live environmental grants for charities, CICs and community groups from 35 funders. 23 offer up to £10,000 and 9 close in the next 30 days.

Can a group without charity status apply?

Often, yes. Many council and community foundation funds accept constituted community groups and CICs. Landfill funders usually ask for a not-for-profit organisation with a governing document, and some want two years of accounts, so check each listing.

What is a third party contribution?

Landfill Communities Fund grants usually need 10% of the grant to be paid by someone other than the landfill operator and the funder, called a contributing third party. It can be a parish council, a local business or another funder, but it cannot come from your own Landfill Communities Fund money.

Are environmental grants for businesses listed here?

No. This page is for charities, CICs and community groups. Grants for businesses, and research funding, are on our environment sector page.

How do you check these grants?

We collect grants from official funder pages, GOV.UK, councils and community foundations, and remove them when they close. Each grant page links to its source and shows when we last checked it. Always confirm the details with the funder before you apply.
