Overview
This UKRI opportunity funds research that tackles the bottlenecks in using quantum computing alongside classical computing. It is run by EPSRC and STFC as part of the UKRI Quantum Programme and Quantum Mission 1. The aim is to help the UK build accessible, UK-based quantum computers that deliver benefits beyond classical supercomputers. Your project must put quantum computing at the centre and link it with high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (including machine learning), or both. You need a clearly defined application use case and a defined end-user to work with. Teams are expected to build, at a minimum, demonstrators that show where end-to-end hybrid quantum-classical workflows offer real advantages. Themes include AI for better quantum performance, hybrid software tools, performance libraries, simulation of quantum architectures, benchmarking frameworks and error suppression. The total fund is £17,000,000. The full economic cost (FEC) of a project can be up to £3,750,000, and EPSRC will fund 80% of it. Projects can run for up to three years and have a fixed start date of 1 June 2027. Funded projects are expected to secure at least 1:1 leverage from public or private sources. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding. Standard UKRI eligibility rules apply. You can be named as project lead on no more than one application, but you can be project co-lead on as many as you like. International collaborators should be listed as project partners. Grants cannot include an IIASA or Norway-based international project co-lead. Uninvited resubmissions of projects already sent to UKRI or any other funder will not be accepted.
