Overview

EPSRC Mathematical Sciences Small Grants fund original research projects that do not need the scale of a standard research grant. They can be used to explore new areas, get proof-of-principle results, run short follow-on projects, build or renew collaborations, realise user impact, or develop postdoctoral researchers' careers. Most of the research must be in EPSRC's Mathematical Sciences theme, and a discipline hopping route is also available. The full economic cost (FEC) can be up to £100,000, and EPSRC funds 80% of it, which is the £10,000 to £80,000 award range shown. Projects last up to 12 months. Around £2 million a year is allocated, subject to review. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, with no closing date. Requirements to check

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding, and EPSRC's standard eligibility rules apply. Check UKRI's individual eligibility and new role types for the Funding Service. A project co-lead (international) can only be based in Norway, under the UKRI and Research Council of Norway Money Follows Cooperation agreement. Uninvited resubmissions of projects submitted to UKRI or any other funder are not accepted. Project leads and co-leads can hold only one small grant at a time. Applications focused only on networking, community building or impact are not suitable.

This summary may not include every exclusion. Check the full eligibility rules, including who and what the funder will not support.

Applications to the Mathematical Sciences Small Grants funding opportunity must focus on original research projects. This funding opportunity will follow a different assessment process to EPSRC’s responsive mode opportunities.Standard EPSRC eligibility rules apply.

How to apply

Apply on the UKRI Funding Service. You cannot use Je-S, and your organisation must be registered. Select Start application on the UKRI funding finder page, confirm you are the project lead, then sign in or create a Funding Service account. The project lead completes the application, with input from the team and any project partners, then sends it to the research office, which submits it to UKRI. Only the lead research organisation can submit. EPSRC no longer publishes closing dates for responsive mode: it batches applications internally and sends them to the next suitable panel, so apply when your application is ready. A closing date shown on the Funding Service is a system requirement, not a deadline to wait for.
