Overview

EPSRC discipline hopping in ICT grants let researchers move between ICT and another discipline. You can have an ICT background and take your skills into a new field, or have other expertise and want to learn ICT research skills to use in your own field. You must be hopping into or out of one of the ICT research areas covered. EPSRC funds 80% of the full economic cost, and your organisation covers the rest. It can pay your salary, travel and subsistence while away, training and a host co-lead. The hop can last between three and 24 months. You must be based at an eligible UK research organisation. There is no closing date. Official source: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/epsrc-discipline-hopping-in-ict-nov-2023-responsive-mode/. Last checked by GrantMatch on 19 October 2026.

Requirements to check

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding, and EPSRC's standard eligibility rules apply. Check UKRI's individual eligibility and new role types for the Funding Service. A project co-lead (international) can only be based in Norway, under the UKRI and Research Council of Norway Money Follows Cooperation agreement. Uninvited resubmissions of projects submitted to UKRI or any other funder are not accepted. You must be hopping into or from one of the ICT research areas covered by the opportunity.

This summary may not include every exclusion. Check the full eligibility rules, including who and what the funder will not support.

How to apply

Apply on the UKRI Funding Service. You cannot use Je-S, and your organisation must be registered. Select Start application on the UKRI funding finder page, confirm you are the project lead, then sign in or create a Funding Service account. The project lead completes the application, with input from the team and any project partners, then sends it to the research office, which submits it to UKRI. Only the lead research organisation can submit. EPSRC no longer publishes closing dates for responsive mode: it batches applications internally and sends them to the next suitable panel, so apply when your application is ready. A closing date shown on the Funding Service is a system requirement, not a deadline to wait for.
