Overview

EPSRC programme grants give flexible funding to world-leading research groups tackling major research challenges, with a team of internationally recognised scientists or engineers focused on one strategic theme. This listing is the outline stage, which leads to an invited full proposal. Funding can last up to six years, and EPSRC funds 80% of the full economic cost. The amount depends on your theme: ask the relevant theme contact for indicative funding. Equipment of up to £400,000 per item can be included. Applications are paused from 1 December 2025 for energy and decarbonisation (clean growth), manufacturing and circular economy, and quantum technologies. All other themes remain open, with no closing date. Official source: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/epsrc-programme-grant-outline-stage/. Last checked by GrantMatch on 19 October 2026.

Requirements to check

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding, and EPSRC's standard eligibility rules apply. You are expected to contact the relevant EPSRC theme contact before submitting. Outlines in energy and decarbonisation (clean growth), manufacturing and circular economy, and quantum technologies are paused. A project co-lead (international) can only be based in Norway, under the Money Follows Cooperation agreement.

This summary may not include every exclusion. Check the full eligibility rules, including who and what the funder will not support.
