Overview

EPSRC's working with overseas scientists grants fund joint projects with researchers in Ireland, Luxembourg, Brazil, Germany and the US, through EPSRC's lead agency agreements. Most of the UK research must be within EPSRC's remit, and overseas partners are funded by their own national agency. There is no limit on the grant value, but it should be within 10% of your expression of interest where one is needed. EPSRC funds 80% of the full economic cost of the UK costs, including staff, equipment of up to £400,000 per item, impact and travel. To work with the US you must first submit an expression of interest and be invited to apply. No expression of interest is needed for Germany, Luxembourg, Ireland or Brazil. There is no closing date. Requirements to check

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding, and EPSRC's standard eligibility rules apply. Check UKRI's individual eligibility and new role types for the Funding Service. A project co-lead (international) can only be based in Norway, under the UKRI and Research Council of Norway Money Follows Cooperation agreement. Uninvited resubmissions of projects submitted to UKRI or any other funder are not accepted. US collaborations need a successful expression of interest and an invitation; collaborations with Germany, Luxembourg, Ireland or Brazil do not.

This summary may not include every exclusion. Check the full eligibility rules, including who and what the funder will not support.

This is an opportunity for you to work with researchers in Ireland, Luxembourg, Brazil, and the US through EPSRC’s lead agency agreements. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding.

How to apply

For US collaborations, submit an expression of interest at least three months ahead and wait for an invitation. Then apply on the UKRI Funding Service. You cannot use Je-S, and your organisation must be registered. Select Start application on the UKRI funding finder page, confirm you are the project lead, then sign in or create a Funding Service account. The project lead completes the application, with input from the team and any project partners, then sends it to the research office, which submits it to UKRI. Only the lead research organisation can submit. EPSRC no longer publishes closing dates for responsive mode: it batches applications internally and sends them to the next suitable panel, so apply when your application is ready. A closing date shown on the Funding Service is a system requirement, not a deadline to wait for.
