Full details from Shetland Community Benefit Fund (Viking Community Fund)

The Viking Community Fund, paid by the Viking wind farm and run by Shetland Community Benefit Fund (SCBF), shares its Community Grant Scheme between all 18 Shetland community council areas each year. The four host areas (Delting, Nesting and Lunnasting, Sandsting and Aithsting, and Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale) receive about £34,829 a year each, and the other 14 areas about £6,966 each. Tier 1 grants are £50 to £1,000 (several a year, up to £2,000 in total) and Tier 2 grants are £1,001 and above, with no set upper limit beyond the area's available funds, for projects within one area or across up to three community council areas. Grants can pay for equipment, consultations, maintenance or refurbishment of community facilities and other community-focused or charitable activities that sustain and develop the local community, but not general running costs. SCBF checks each application and the local community council decides. Both tiers are open all year, subject to the funding left in each area, and decisions are aimed for within eight weeks.

How to apply

Create an account on the Shetland Community Benefit Fund website ('Apply online') and complete the online application, uploading the documents listed in the guidelines. For help, email admin@scbf.org.uk. Choose Tier 1 or Tier 2 and the community council area your project benefits. Tier 2 applicants upload their constitution, a recent bank statement, accounts, a budget and two quotes. Some community councils (Lerwick, Sandwick, Yell) only meet at set times of the year, so apply early.
