Funding can pay for capital projects, such as building or improving agricultural buildings, and for setting up Common Grazings Committees, which manage common grazing and are elected by the crofters who use it. For eligible capital projects the grant can cover all aspects of the work, including materials, transporting materials, contractors and your own labour. The full list of eligible work is in the scheme guidance. Over any two-year period you can apply for up to £25,000 as an individual crofter, or up to £125,000 as a group of crofters. The scheme is open to croft tenants, owner-occupier crofters, sub-tenants of crofts, groups made up of any of these, and Common Grazings Committees properly constituted under regulation by the Crofting Commission. Crofters with shares in an unregulated common grazing may get help with the cost of setting up a properly constituted committee. You cannot also apply if you have received or applied for other public funding for the same proposal. The scheme is competitive and scored against selection criteria. Rural Payments and Services says that if the year's budget is used up, it will close the scheme until 1 January the next year and post this on the scheme's updates page. The page does not give a current annual budget, so check it before applying. Who it suits: crofters planning building or land improvements.
