BFI Development Funding
British Film Institute
The BFI awards National Lottery funding to support the development of original feature films. This includes live action and animated fiction films across a range of genres and perspectives. The goal is to help filmmakers develop their projects to a stage where they can seek production funding. Producers apply through a limited company registered at Companies House. Applications are open all year except during an annual closure in April.
BFI National Lottery Audience Projects Fund

The BFI National Lottery Audience Projects Fund supports the exhibition and distribution of independent film and immersive projects across the UK. It funds ambitious, audience-facing work that brings UK and international films to new audiences in original ways. The fund also supports sector-facing projects that help the film industry adapt and innovate. You can apply for multi-year projects, short-term projects, or smaller pilot projects if you are new to the fund. Applications are accepted year-round. If your project involves distributing a single film, you must apply at least 10 weeks before the release date. All other applications must be submitted at least 16 weeks before your project starts.
BFI UK Focus Fund
British Film Institute
The BFI UK Focus Fund uses National Lottery money to support UK-focused activity at international film and screen industry events. It helps UK screen professionals connect with international buyers, partners, and co-producers. You can apply if your organisation is legally registered and your event covers feature films, documentaries, animation, or interactive media. Applications are accepted all year round but must be submitted at least 12 weeks before your activity starts.
BFI National Lottery Screen Heritage Fund: Project Funding
British Film Institute
The BFI National Lottery Screen Heritage Fund has £8.11 million available for the 2026 to 2029 period. It supports organisations that hold and run screen heritage collections on a not-for-profit basis. Projects must deliver clear benefits for under-served communities and audiences. Funded work can include expanding access to collections, community co-curation, contemporary collecting, workforce development, and reducing the carbon footprint of collections. Your project must meet at least two of the fund's stated aims. Eligible organisations include registered charities, UK universities and colleges, qualifying limited companies, community interest companies, and local or combined authorities.
