The North East covers Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and the Tees Valley. Community money here comes from the community foundation, councils, housing associations, the water company and a growing number of offshore wind and energy funds, and much of it is aimed at one county, town or estate rather than the whole region.

This page lists live grants tagged to the North East that are open to charities, CICs or community groups, including funds only for Northumberland. UK-wide community grants are listed underneath.

Guide

Checked 21 October 2026 against the official sources linked.

The community foundations

Two community foundations give many of the grants on this page. Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland covers the north of the region, and Point North, known until 2024 as County Durham Community Foundation, covers County Durham, Darlington and the Tees Valley. Each runs many separate funds, some for one place such as a parish or a part of Northumberland, and some for a cause such as young people, older people or people facing hardship. Read the area and purpose of each fund before you apply.

Housing associations and utilities

Several housing associations in the region run small community funds for the neighbourhoods where their tenants live, and Northumbrian Water has funds for community and environmental projects. These are often quick, short applications for a few hundred or a few thousand pounds.

Councils and councillor grants

Councils such as Durham County Council give councillors a small budget to support groups in their ward. These grants are usually modest but simple to apply for, and a councillor who knows your work can be a useful supporter for other bids too.

Regional support

VONNE is the regional support body for the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in the North East, with news, training and networks. Local councils for voluntary service can also help you find funding and check a draft application.

The Jackie Haq Fund is run by Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. It supports small grassroots organisations that are tackling domestic violence, poverty, racism, disadvantage, and mental health and suicide prevention. You can ask for up to £1,500. The fund is for organisations, not individuals. It covers Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. The closing date is 23 November 2026. The funder lists this fund among those currently accepting applications, so it is open now. Before you apply for the first time, you will need an account on the foundation's grantee portal. The funder also has a page for new applicants, so you can check that you and your activity meet its eligibility criteria. There is an FAQs page too, and a Help and Support page if you need extra support to apply. One practical point. If this fund does not quite fit your work, the foundation says you can make a general application at any time of year, as long as your organisation is in Tyne and Wear or Northumberland. This fund is a good place to start if you run a small community group supporting people facing abuse, hardship, discrimination or poor mental health in one of the areas above. The scheme is led by The National Archives as part of the Spaces, Places and Belonging Community Hub, with Leeds Museums & Galleries, the National Library of Wales and the Community Archives & Heritage Group. Eligible costs could include course or workshop fees (in-person or online), travel and accommodation linked to training, mentoring or coaching, conferences or sector events, learning materials such as books and toolkits, and shadowing or placements in galleries, libraries, archives and museums. The bursaries suit individuals at any stage of their career or background, including independent practitioners with no organisation behind them. The funder especially wants to reach people who may not have had access to this kind of development before. You need to be involved in some way in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) or heritage sector, live in the UK and be at least 18. Applications are taken on a rolling basis and assessed quarterly by a panel. The page lists a closing date of 3 July 2027. It also says bursaries are offered on a rolling basis from September 2025 to March 2027. You apply through an online form. One practical point to plan for: you can only receive one Community Hub Bursary. Previously unsuccessful applicants can apply again with the agreement of the Community Hub team. Support for vulnerable people in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland

Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland

Funding amount not listedNorth East England

The Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland funds a wide range of causes across the North East. This page is the starting point for applying. It helps you check your eligibility, see which funds are open and register to apply. If a fund with a current call suits your work, you can apply to that. If nothing matches, you can make a general application instead. As long as your organisation is in Tyne and Wear or Northumberland, you can do this at any time of year. Several funds could suit work with people facing hardship. The Mayor's Opportunity Fund backs practical cost-of-living help and offers up to £7,500 on a rolling basis to organisations. The Jackie Haq Fund supports small grassroots organisations tackling domestic violence, poverty, racism, disadvantage and mental health or suicide prevention. It offers up to £1,500 and closes on 23 November 2026. Other funds on the page cover young people, culture, sport, STEM and capital projects. Maximum awards run up to £25,000, depending on the fund. Be aware that each fund has its own location, applicant type and closing date. Some are for individuals only. The page gives no set award size for a general application. Before applying for the first time, you will need an account on the grantee portal. Help and support is available if you need it. Official source: https://www.communityfoundation.org.uk/apply/. Durham Councillors' Grant

Durham County Council

Funding amount not listedNorth East England

The Durham Councillors' Grant is a way to get funding for a local project in County Durham. Each county councillor has a budget that they can allocate to projects in their local community. It suits voluntary and community groups with a project idea that would benefit people in the area. The best first step is to talk to your own county councillor about your plans. The key caveat is that you must discuss your idea with your local County Councillor and win their support before an application can be considered. Without that backing, your application will not go forward. Durham County Council has a Your Councillors page. It lists councillor contact details and the local projects they have supported, so you can see what has been backed before. If you want to look at other options, the council also runs a free community funding website called Durham 4 Community. You can sign up to search for funding schemes for your group, apply for funding and get advice on writing your application. Please note that the Local Networks Fund, which appears on the same council page, is a separate scheme. It offered between £5,000 and £10,000 per project and closed on 30 September 2026. It is not the Councillors' Grant. Official source: https://www.durham.gov.uk/communityfunding. Last checked by GrantMatch on 16 October 2026.

The 1989 Willan Charitable Trust

Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland

Up to £10,000North East England

The 1989 Willan Charitable Trust is a fund run by Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. It gives grants to organisations, and the funder's page lists it as a rolling grant. That means you can apply at any time rather than waiting for a closing date. The fund covers a wide area. It is open to organisations in County Durham, Tees Valley, Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. The maximum grant is £10,000. The page does not give a minimum award. The funder's listing does not describe what the fund pays for, so this page cannot tell you the specific themes or activities it backs. The funder says its grants support a wide range of causes across the North East, and each fund has its own "Read more" page with the details. Before you apply for the first time, you will need an account on the funder's grantee portal. The funder also asks new applicants to check its eligibility criteria first. If you need support with your application, it has a Help and Support page. One practical point to bear in mind: the funder says some funds only open at certain times, but this one is listed as rolling. If no current fund suits your project, the funder says organisations in Tyne and Wear or Northumberland can make a general application at any time of year. Northumberland S106 Housing Developer Fund for Sport, Play and Recreation

Northumberland County Council

Funding amount not listedNorth East England

This fund from Northumberland County Council pays for children's play areas and outdoor sports and recreation facilities. The money comes from section 106 contributions made by housing developers. It can cover new facilities or improvements to existing ones. Examples include new children's play areas, new sports pitches or areas, new equipment in an existing play area, upgraded changing rooms for outdoor sport and specialist equipment such as a cricket roller. In some areas of the north, certain indoor sports and recreation facilities can also be funded. It suits not-for-profit organisations such as community groups, residents' associations, sports clubs and schools. Your project must be in one of the specific geographical areas the fund covers, and it must be open to the general public. If a sports club or school applies, you need to include appropriate arrangements for wider community use. Individuals and businesses cannot apply. The page does not give a set award size. How much is available depends on the amounts collected at the time and on requests from other projects in the same area. Funding can be limited, and sometimes there is none available. The council publishes a table of available balances and lists of past awards, which can help you see what has been funded in your area. To apply, you complete the S106 Housing Developer Fund application form. Read the evaluation criteria and guidance notes first. A panel of council officers assesses applications and makes recommendations. Applications for more than £100,000 take longer to assess and approve. Supporting people with practical cost-of-living interventions in North East England

Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland

Up to £7,500North East England

The Mayor's Opportunity Fund supports people with practical cost-of-living interventions across North East England. It is run by Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, and it is listed on the funder's page as a grant for organisations. You can ask for up to £7,500. The page does not give a minimum award. The fund is a rolling grant. That means the funder lists it as open without a closing date, so you do not need to work to a fixed deadline. It covers County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Tees Valley is not on the list of areas for this fund, so check that your work takes place in one of the seven named areas before you go any further. The funder asks first-time applicants to read its eligibility information and to register for an account on its grantee portal before applying. Plan time for this, because you cannot apply without an account. The funder also offers a Help and Support page and a set of FAQs if you need a hand with your application. One practical point to keep in mind: the listing on the funder's page is brief. It names the fund and the maximum grant, but the detail of what counts as a practical cost-of-living intervention sits behind the Read more link. Look at that fund page and the new applicant guidance so you can be sure your project fits before you spend time on an application. Official source: https://www.communityfoundation.org.uk/apply/. Social Investment Gateway Programme

School for Social Entrepreneurs

Up to £24,000National (UK-wide)

The Social Investment Gateway Programme is a free 12-month support programme run by the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE). It helps charities, social enterprises and community organisations strengthen their trading and move closer to being ready for social investment within the next three years. The programme will support 75 leaders across four cohorts. Cohort 2 runs from 1 March 2027 to 1 February 2028, and applications are now open. Face-to-face sessions take place in London and Manchester at the start, middle and end of the programme. You can choose between two types of grant. A Match Trading Grant of up to £18,000 is designed to challenge your trading, and you can only draw it down as your trading grows. It is paid over 12 months in five instalments. A repayable grant of up to £24,000 is also available, with an average of around £22,000. SSE is piloting repayable grants, and 10 are on offer across both rounds. SSE will share the risk with you and wants to learn with you how repayable grants might help organisations get into social investment. The programme suits organisations that have a trading model and plans to grow over the next year. You might want support with market development, pricing and sales, financial strategy, systems, governance, demonstrating impact or managing risk. The deadline is noon on Friday 6 November 2026. One practical point: you should usually have an annual income above £100,000, counting all income and not just trading income. Groups below that level with a strong trading model are encouraged to contact SSE. Official source: https://www.actiontogether.org.uk/social-investment-gateway-programme.
