The South East runs from Kent and Sussex across Surrey, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. It is a wealthy region overall, but funders here focus hard on pockets of need, and much of the local money is held by county community foundations and county councils.

This page lists live grants tagged to the South East that are open to charities, CICs or community groups. UK-wide community grants are listed underneath.

Guide

Checked 21 October 2026 against the official sources linked.

County community foundations

Most counties have a community foundation. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation says its aim is to support smaller charities and community groups, Kent Community Foundation funds groups across Kent and Medway, and Oxfordshire Community Foundation invests around £2 million a year in local charities. MK Community Foundation has funded Milton Keynes groups for more than 38 years.

Show the local need

Because averages in the region are high, a strong application points to the specific need it meets: a deprived ward, isolated older people, a lack of services in a rural area. Local data from your council or the community foundation can help you make the case.

County and district councils

County councils such as Surrey run community grant schemes tied to their priorities, and district and town councils often have small grants of their own. Their deadlines tend to follow the council year, so check in spring for new rounds.

Seed and small grants

Several funders here offer seed or starter grants of a few hundred pounds for new groups. They are a good first step if you have not had a grant before, and they help you build the track record that larger funders look for.

Funding for Organisations – Charities and Community Groups

Kent Community Foundation

Funding amount not listedEngland, South East England

Kent Community Foundation gives grants to support local people, charities and community groups in Kent and Medway. This listing covers its funding for organisations, which is aimed at charities and community groups. The Foundation funds work under five priority areas: mental health and wellbeing; children, young people and families; crisis and basic needs; connected communities; and the environment. Through these areas it funds hundreds of charities and community groups across the county. Its vision is a Kent and Medway where every community has the opportunity to thrive. Help is on hand if you are new to applying. The Foundation says hundreds of small charities and community groups secure funding with its support every year. You can read its application guidance, browse the FAQs and use a short eligibility checker to see whether your organisation qualifies. The Grants Team can guide you through the process by email at hello@kentcf.org.uk or by phone on 01303 814 500. The Foundation also has other routes. Professionals working with people in financial hardship can nominate individuals and families for a grant. There is also a social lending programme, with unsecured loans of £10,000 to £100,000 and up to 30% as a grant. These are separate from funding for organisations. One practical point: this page works as a starting point rather than a full set of guidelines. Use the eligibility checker and the guidance before you begin, so you can be sure your work fits one of the priority areas and your organisation qualifies. Reading Small Grants Fund 2026/27

Reading Borough Council

Up to £7,500South East England

Reading Borough Council has set aside £150,000 for small grants to the voluntary and community sector in 2026/27. Grants of up to £7,500 are available to smaller local groups that want to help make Reading a more equal place to live. The fund can pay for one-off local events, running events, minor start-up costs to get a new idea off the ground, equipment and sessional costs. Your project should show how it builds the financial resilience of individuals or communities. It should also support the council's aims to tackle inequality and to be actively anti-racist. The fund suits charities, voluntary organisations, community groups, faith groups, sports groups, arts groups, cultural organisations, uniformed groups, schools and not-for-profit social enterprises based in Reading borough. Your annual income must be below £100,000. A share of the money is set aside for bids under £2,500, to support smaller local activities. If you only need £250 to £500, the council says you should apply for a micro grant instead. The deadline is 13 November 2026. The council says it will tell you whether you were successful before Christmas. One practical point to plan for: your project must meet an unmet need of Reading residents and must not already be available in your local area. You will also need to show it is not funded, or able to be funded, through other sources. You can only submit one bid per organisation, and you cannot ask for money to continue a project funded in a previous round. Funding must be spent within 12 months of the award. You will need to send an interim report after 6 months and a full report at the end of the project. Small & Vital Fund

Berkshire Community Foundation

Up to £1,000South East England

The Small & Vital Fund from Berkshire Community Foundation offers quick, flexible support to small community groups. It is open for applications all year round, so there is no deadline to work towards. You can apply for up to £1,000, subject to funding availability. The fund is for organisations that need a small amount of money to keep their work going or to respond to local needs. It is open to a wide range of projects. These include bringing people together and reducing isolation, providing education and training, supporting people facing challenges or disadvantage, improving wellbeing, confidence or life skills, offering practical help, and strengthening the community. This fund suits very small organisations. Your annual income must be £10,000 or less. You must have been operating for at least 12 months and be able to provide 12 months of financial records, such as annual accounts. Your project must be based primarily in Berkshire. Individuals cannot apply, and the fund will not cover costs you have already incurred. When reviewing applications, the Foundation looks at the difference your project will make, your connection to the community you serve, how realistic your plans are, the level of need you are responding to, and any previous BCF funding and outstanding monitoring reports. One thing to keep in mind: the Foundation receives many more applications than it has funding for, and it cannot guarantee that any application will succeed. HIWCF Community Grants

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation

£1,000 - £5,000England, South East England

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF) offers grants through an annual calendar of themed programmes. They are all designed to build thriving communities across Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. The focus is on smaller, grassroots organisations. Generally, grants are between £1,000 and £5,000. They go to non-profit organisations, including charities, charitable incorporated organisations, companies limited by guarantee, community interest companies limited by guarantee and constituted community organisations. HIWCF funds against six impact themes, and there is a separate route for individuals applying for themselves. Each programme has its own criteria, so read the details of the specific fund you are interested in before you start. The page also points to application guidance, a guide to filling out the form, FAQs and the grant policy. You can subscribe to alerts to hear when new funding opportunities open. One practical point to keep in mind: demand for grants is higher than the money available. HIWCF says it can often fund less than half of the applications it receives. It also says it does not currently offer hardship grants for individuals. If you want advice while you apply, you can call the Grants Team on 01962 798700 or email Grantsadmin@hiwcf.com. Competition is strong. Demand for grants exceeds the funds available, and the foundation can often fund less than half the applications it receives. It is worth reading the application guidance, FAQs and grant policy before you apply. If you need advice or support with an application, you can call the Grants Team on 01962 798700 or email Grantsadmin@hiwcf.com. The foundation also makes grants to individuals, but it does not currently offer hardship grants for individuals. Official source: https://hiwcf.org.uk/grants/. Funding for Organisations

Kent Community Foundation

Funding amount not listedEngland, South East England

Kent Community Foundation gives grants to charities and community groups working in Kent and Medway. The funding supports local people and the issues that matter most to their communities. Every year, hundreds of small charities and community groups secure funding with the foundation's help. Your work should fit one of five priority areas. These are mental health and wellbeing; children, young people and families; crisis and basic needs; connected communities; and environment. Past projects include sustaining community gardens in Broadstairs and improving wellbeing access for African and other ethnic minority communities in North Kent. Support is built into the process. There is practical application guidance, an eligibility checker that takes a few minutes, a set of FAQs and a friendly Grants Team you can contact by email or phone. This is useful whether you are new to applying or have applied before. The foundation also runs a social lending programme. It offers unsecured loans of £10,000 to £100,000, with up to 30% as a grant, for organisations that want to grow, innovate or sustain their impact. Funding for individuals works differently, because professionals working with people in financial hardship in Kent or Medway nominate them. A practical tip: before you start, make sure your project fits one of the priority areas. The eligibility checker is the quickest way to find out if your organisation qualifies. Members Locality Budget

Hertfordshire County Council

Up to £5,000England, South East England

Every Hertfordshire county councillor has £5,000 a year to spend on local projects. This is the Members Locality Budget, run by Hertfordshire County Council. The money can back projects that promote the social, economic or environmental wellbeing of a councillor's local area. Grants can be given for almost anything, as long as it is legal and does not go against a county council policy. Past grants have gone to non-profit community events, crime prevention, health and education. You can ask for any amount, up to the £5,000 that each councillor holds. That means a single grant can be as much as £5,000. The key first step is to talk to your local county councillor. You need their agreement before you apply. You can search by postcode to find them. If your idea covers more than one division, you can approach all of the relevant councillors, but you only need to make one application for each project. Once you have spoken to your councillor, you apply online. Your councillor then recommends whether a grant should be awarded, and you hear the outcome by email. Grants can only be paid to an organisation. Individuals can ask for a grant, but the money must be paid through an organisation. One practical point to plan for: if you are awarded a grant, you will need to keep receipts and invoices that show how the money was spent, and produce a brief evaluation of your project. Social Investment Gateway Programme

School for Social Entrepreneurs

Up to £24,000National (UK-wide)

The Social Investment Gateway Programme is a free 12-month support programme run by the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE). It helps charities, social enterprises and community organisations strengthen their trading and move closer to being ready for social investment within the next three years. The programme will support 75 leaders across four cohorts. Cohort 2 runs from 1 March 2027 to 1 February 2028, and applications are now open. Face-to-face sessions take place in London and Manchester at the start, middle and end of the programme. You can choose between two types of grant. A Match Trading Grant of up to £18,000 is designed to challenge your trading, and you can only draw it down as your trading grows. It is paid over 12 months in five instalments. A repayable grant of up to £24,000 is also available, with an average of around £22,000. SSE is piloting repayable grants, and 10 are on offer across both rounds. SSE will share the risk with you and wants to learn with you how repayable grants might help organisations get into social investment. The programme suits organisations that have a trading model and plans to grow over the next year. You might want support with market development, pricing and sales, financial strategy, systems, governance, demonstrating impact or managing risk. The deadline is noon on Friday 6 November 2026. One practical point: you should usually have an annual income above £100,000, counting all income and not just trading income. Groups below that level with a strong trading model are encouraged to contact SSE. Official source: https://www.actiontogether.org.uk/social-investment-gateway-programme.
