Guide

Checked 21 October 2026 against the official sources linked.

Community foundations

Heart of England Community Foundation and the Community Foundation for Staffordshire and Shropshire run many of the grants on this page, from small grassroots funds to themed programmes. Many funds cover one city, district or neighbourhood, so read the area of benefit first.

Source: UK Community Foundations: find your local community foundation

Birmingham

Birmingham City Council runs community and culture funds, and the city has several long-standing grant-making trusts that fund local charities. Groups in Birmingham often have more options than the headline numbers suggest, so check the UK-wide list underneath as well.

Housing providers

Housing associations in the region run small community funds for the areas where their tenants live. They tend to be quick to apply for and suit projects such as food, activities for children, and help for residents with the cost of living.

Parish and district councils

Outside the cities, district councils often give councillors a small community budget, and parish and town councils can make grants to local groups. A few hundred pounds from a local council is often enough to start a new activity or match a bigger grant. Ask the clerk when the council sets its grants budget, as many decide once a year.

The Deutsche Bank Opportunity Fund

Heart of England Community Foundation

£1,000 - £5,000West Midlands

The Deutsche Bank Opportunity Fund is run by Heart of England Community Foundation. It supports registered charities, and community and voluntary organisations working to reduce homelessness across Birmingham. Grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 are available. The fund backs work that tackles disadvantage, prevents or eases poverty by providing food, offers activities that improve quality of life, and supports local solutions to meet local needs. If you are a charity or community group working on homelessness in Birmingham, this fund could suit you. It is a good fit for small, practical projects rather than large-scale programmes. The application deadline is 11 November 2026. Any grant you receive must be spent within 12 months of receipt, so it helps to plan your project timeline before you apply. One practical point to keep in mind: the foundation says it may close the fund early if it receives a high volume of applications. Chelmsley Wood Pride in Place Get Talking Fund

Heart of England Community Foundation

Up to £10,000West Midlands

This fund pays local groups to run community activities and events in Chelmsley Wood that help people shape the Pride in Place Plan, part of the UK Government's Pride in Place Programme. Heart of England Community Foundation administers it for Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and the Chelmsley Wood Neighbourhood Board. You could use a grant to add Pride in Place consultation to a regular activity such as a coffee morning. You could run an event in a public space or community centre with high footfall. You could also expand your current sessions with outreach or extra activity. Funded activities must use the standard Pride in Place messaging and branding, and must collect and share community data in a standardised format. The fund suits established charities and community groups with strong roots in the area. A total of £100,000 is available. Individual organisations can apply for up to £2,000. Partnerships of two or more named organisations, with one lead, can apply for up to £10,000. The amount awarded to a partnership is likely to reflect the breadth and depth of the partnership. Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire Communities Fund

Heart of England Community Foundation

£500 - £3,000West Midlands

The Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Communities Fund is run by the Heart of England Community Foundation. The money comes from the earnings of the Foundation's own endowment fund. Grants of up to £3,000 are available for organisations in Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire. The smallest grant you can request is £500. That makes it a good fit for smaller local projects rather than large-scale work. Your application must meet at least one of four aims. These are to promote health and wellbeing, to tackle disadvantage, to promote community cohesion, or to develop sustainable communities. The page does not give a closing date or say whether the fund is open all year, so you may want to look at the Apply button on the page to see how things stand before you start. One practical point to note. Before you apply, the funder asks you to read the Fund Factsheet and its Essential Information. These documents should explain the detail of what the fund will and will not support, so it is worth reading both before you put your application together. Edgbaston & Northfield NNS Fund for Older Adults (50+)

Heart of England Community Foundation

Up to £10,000West Midlands

This fund supports projects for older adults aged 50 and over in Edgbaston and Northfield, Birmingham. It is run by Heart of England Community Foundation as part of the Neighbourhood Network Schemes, which are funded by Birmingham City Council. The schemes aim to help older people connect with individuals, groups, organisations, activities, services and places in their local neighbourhood. You can apply for a grant of up to £10,000. All funded activity needs to focus on citizens leading healthier, happier lives with increased financial capability within their own homes and communities. Your project must contribute to at least one of the fund's outcomes. In both areas, these are helping people to remain engaged with social activity, live healthy lifestyles and increase their financial capability. In Northfield, you can also aim to help people retain their independence at home, or help families and carers feel more supported. Each area has its own priorities. In Edgbaston, these are older adults, promoting brain health as part of dementia awareness, preventing social isolation while supporting mental health and wellbeing, and men's health and engagement. In Northfield, they are older adults, mental health, falls prevention, digital inclusion and safety, supporting diverse communities, and inclusive communication. One practical point to keep in mind: your organisation needs to be working actively within the wards of Edgbaston or Northfield, as defined by the constituency boundaries. There is a separate Fund Factsheet for each area, and the funder asks you to read the one for your area before you apply. Official source: https://www.heartofenglandcf.org/nns/. Edgbaston & Northfield NNS Fund for Younger Adults

Heart of England Community Foundation

Up to £10,000West Midlands

This fund supports community projects for working age adults aged 18 to 49 who have long term disabilities. It is part of the Neighbourhood Network Schemes, which Birmingham City Council funds, and Heart of England Community Foundation runs it for the Edgbaston and Northfield areas of Birmingham. Grants of up to £10,000 are available. They help local community groups deliver projects for vulnerable people in this age group. All funded activity needs to focus on citizens leading healthier, happier lives with increased financial capability within their own homes and communities. The fund aims to make existing places and activities more accessible to disabled adults, to invest in new community activities they can use, and to build the skills, knowledge and support available to community-based networks, groups and organisations. Alan Higgs Community Grants

Heart of England Community Foundation

£500 - £1,000West Midlands

The Alan Higgs Community Grants offer small grants of up to £1,000 to grassroots community-based organisations. The fund is run by the Heart of England Community Foundation together with the Alan Edward Higgs Charity, which has been making grants to charities across the West Midlands since 1979. The fund aims to support people in Coventry and Warwickshire. Your application needs to meet one of three aims: relieving poverty; promoting economic and community development, and employment; or general charitable purposes. Priority will be given to organisations whose focus is supporting children and young people. If that is your work, it is worth making it clear in your application. These grants are in addition to the Higgs Charity's normal grant making programme. They are designed to share expertise in making grants to small organisations, so the fund is a good fit if you are a small local group rather than a large charity. Before you apply, the funder asks you to read the Fund Factsheet and its Essential Information. These documents are linked from the grant page. Reading them first will help you check that your project fits the fund. The page does not give a closing date or say whether the fund is currently open, so it is worth looking at the funder's grant page for the latest position before you start work on an application. NNS Digital Fund

Heart of England Community Foundation

Up to £2,000West Midlands

The NNS Digital Fund offers grants of up to £2,000 to help organisations become more digitally inclusive. It is part of the Digital Neighbourhood Network Scheme (DNNS), a digital project run by Northfield Community Partnership and commissioned by Birmingham City Council's Prevention & Communities team in the Adult Social Care Directorate. You can ask for money for projects in three areas: marketing, training and internet connectivity. The wider aim is to help older citizens and citizens with long-term disabilities get access to essential digital tools, tech and services. The fund also wants to inspire communities to do more to be digitally inclusive. The scheme works with the city's 10 Neighbourhood Network Schemes, one in each constituency. It also supports local community groups and organisations, as well as social workers and social prescribers, to build their digital skills and confidence. That helps them offer the right digital support to the people they serve. This fund suits organisations that want to help local people get online or use digital services with confidence, and whose project fits one of the three funding areas. One practical step comes first. You must contact the NNS Digital team at info@digitalnns.org.uk before you submit your application. This will be checked with the team when your application is assessed. Please also read the Fund Factsheet before you apply. Official source: https://www.heartofenglandcf.org/digital-neighbourhood-network-scheme-dnns/. Last checked by GrantMatch on 16 October 2026.

Community Impact Grants Programme

Benefact Trust

Funding amount not listedEngland, West Midlands

Benefact Trust's Community Impact Grants give revenue funding to Christian organisations for projects that support Christian mission and deliver social impact in the UK and Ireland. There are two objectives: addressing social challenges facing communities, such as poverty and the cost of living, homelessness, isolation and loneliness, mental health and addiction; and growing and sustaining Christian congregations and communities, for example through faith development, youth work, church planting, volunteer training or staff posts that support sustainability. Projects can be funded for up to three years. The programme no longer funds capital or building work; church repairs and building projects go to Benefact's separate Building Grants programme. You do not ask for a set amount. You present your total project costs, which must be at least £2,000, and Grants Officers calculate the grant. Grants are typically 10% to 30% of eligible costs, before any deprivation uplift, and do not normally exceed 50%. The average grant in 2025 was £23,000. Successful applicants also get an automatic 10% added towards core costs. The programme is open all year with no deadlines. One practical point: you must have secured at least 30% of eligible project costs from other sources before you apply, and after a grant you cannot apply to the programme again for two years. The Harry Payne Fund

Heart of England Community Foundation

£500 - £2,000West Midlands

The Harry Payne Fund from Heart of England Community Foundation pays for a large variety of projects. It began in 1939 as part of the Harry Payne Trust, so it has a long history of backing good causes. Grants are for up to £2,000. The fund has two clear aims. The first is to help people who are disadvantaged. The second is to help smaller causes, where a modest donation can make a real difference. If your project is small in scale and you only need a modest sum, this fund may suit you well. It may suit you even better if your work supports people facing disadvantage. The page does not give a closing date. It does show an Apply now button, so you can start from the fund page. Before you apply, the foundation asks you to read the Fund Factsheet and its Essential Information. These documents set out the detail you need, so it pays to read them first. There is one important exclusion. For this fund, the foundation will not support any projects that involve or provide support to the armed forces. If your project has any link to the armed forces, this is not the right fund for you and you should look elsewhere. Official source: https://www.heartofenglandcf.org/harry-payne-fund/. Social Investment Gateway Programme

School for Social Entrepreneurs

Up to £24,000National (UK-wide)

The Social Investment Gateway Programme is a free 12-month support programme run by the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE). It helps charities, social enterprises and community organisations strengthen their trading and move closer to being ready for social investment within the next three years. The programme will support 75 leaders across four cohorts. Cohort 2 runs from 1 March 2027 to 1 February 2028, and applications are now open. Face-to-face sessions take place in London and Manchester at the start, middle and end of the programme. You can choose between two types of grant. A Match Trading Grant of up to £18,000 is designed to challenge your trading, and you can only draw it down as your trading grows. It is paid over 12 months in five instalments. A repayable grant of up to £24,000 is also available, with an average of around £22,000. SSE is piloting repayable grants, and 10 are on offer across both rounds. SSE will share the risk with you and wants to learn with you how repayable grants might help organisations get into social investment. The programme suits organisations that have a trading model and plans to grow over the next year. You might want support with market development, pricing and sales, financial strategy, systems, governance, demonstrating impact or managing risk. The deadline is noon on Friday 6 November 2026. One practical point: you should usually have an annual income above £100,000, counting all income and not just trading income. Groups below that level with a strong trading model are encouraged to contact SSE. Official source: https://www.actiontogether.org.uk/social-investment-gateway-programme.
